Do You Have to Be Home When Your Windows Are Being Washed?

This is one of the most common pre-booking questions Portland homeowners ask. The short answer: for exterior-only cleaning, you don’t need to be home. For interior cleaning, someone needs to be available to provide access. But the longer answer reveals what actually matters for a good result regardless of whether you’re present or not.

In 15 years of washing windows in Portland, I’ve done thousands of jobs with owners present and thousands without. What makes a job go well is not whether the homeowner is watching — it’s whether the access, communication, and logistics are set up correctly before I arrive.

Exterior-Only Cleaning — You Don’t Need to Be Home

Exterior window cleaning — glass, frames, sills, and screens from outside — requires no interior access. If you’ve booked exterior-only service (common for the first visit when the inside is relatively clean), you don’t need to be home. Andrew will text before arrival and after completion with a summary of the work done.

What helps even if you’re not there:

• Gate codes or lock box access to the back yard communicated in advance
• Pets noted — especially large dogs with exterior yard access
• Any windows not to be cleaned noted in advance (construction zone, renovation area)
• A contact number where you can be reached if Andrew finds something worth flagging (broken seal, frame damage, blocked downspout)

Interior Cleaning — Someone Needs to Be Available

Interior window cleaning requires access to every room. For most Portland homes, this means someone needs to be home — or you need to provide a way for Andrew to access the home independently (door code, hidden key, leaving a door unlocked).

Interior cleaning logistics that make the job run smoothly:

• Clear access to window areas — furniture moved away from windows if possible, blinds and curtains pulled back
• Pets in another room or in the yard during interior cleaning — pets are curious about the cleaning process and can get underfoot or streak freshly cleaned interior glass with their noses
• Plants on windowsills moved in advance — Andrew moves plants carefully but moving them before the visit avoids any risk to fragile or valuable specimens
• Any specific windows to skip noted — children’s rooms where the window is used for ventilation and parents prefer not to have it accessed, for example

What Andrew Does Whether You’re Home or Not

• Pre-arrival text — Andrew texts when he’s en route, typically 20–30 minutes before arrival
• Pre-clean walkthrough — if you’re present, Andrew walks the property with you before starting to confirm scope and note any special conditions
• Post-clean summary — Andrew texts or tells you directly what was done, any conditions noted (broken seals, frame damage, moss establishing, clogged downspouts), and any windows that couldn’t be accessed
• Full cleanup before leaving — regardless of whether you’re watching, all debris from the clean is removed and all screens are replaced before Andrew leaves the property

Commercial Properties — Coordinator Access

For commercial window washing — retail storefronts, office buildings, restaurant facades — a building manager or keyholder typically needs to be reachable but not necessarily present. Early-morning commercial cleaning (7–8am, before business hours) often happens with a keyholder briefly present to unlock and then depart. Andrew coordinates this with the property manager or business owner at the booking stage.
