When Should Portland Homeowners Clean Their Windows? The Short Answer

Last Thursday on NE Alberta Street runs May through September, creating significant foot traffic on Portland’s Alberta Arts District commercial strip every last Thursday of the month. This is the single largest recurring public event in North Portland and it draws thousands of people who are specifically moving on foot through the neighbourhood — past every storefront on NE Alberta from 15th to 30th. Alberta storefronts that get their windows cleaned monthly through the Last Thursday season present themselves to an enormous passing audience.

For homes that had their spring clean in May, summer typically doesn’t require another professional visit. For homes that didn’t get a spring clean, or homes in areas with particularly heavy tree cover (Laurelhurst, Irvington, Forest Park adjacent properties), a mid-summer clean in July addresses the accumulated spring pollen that was never removed and refreshes the glass before the wildfire season begins in August.

Wildfire Season — August through October

Since 2017, wildfire smoke from eastern Oregon and Washington fires has become an annual reality for Portland from approximately late July through October. The smoke events themselves — where AQI spikes above 150 and Portland air quality alerts go out — are the most critical period for window protection.

Wildfire ash is alkaline — typically with a pH of 9 to 12, depending on what burned. When alkaline ash deposits on glass and gets wet (which in Oregon, it will), it can begin chemically etching the glass surface. This is a time-sensitive issue: ash on glass should ideally be removed within 72 hours of deposit to prevent permanent etching. After 72 hours, the etching can become irreversible without professional polishing.
